The City of New Castle offices will remain closed through Tuesday, January 27th, 2026. Thank you again for your patience as we work to keep the City clean and safe and our staff safe as well. A reminder that Solid waste pickup originally scheduled for Monday, January 26th, 2026 will be collected on Wednesday, January 28th, 2026. Solid waste pickup originally scheduled for Tuesday, January 27th, 2026 will be collected on Thursday, January 29th, 2026. Level 2 Driving Restriction Reduced to a Level 1. State of Emergency Remains in Effect.

The Level 2 Driving Restriction for Kent and New Castle Counties has been reduced to a Level 1 Driving Restriction. This means that drivers should avoid traveling on roadways, unless there is a significant safety, health, or business reason to do so. All motorists are urged to drive with extreme caution. Public Works crews continue to work to plow the City. We thank you for your patience as we continue to cleanup from this storm.

City Offices Closed; Monday 1/26 & Solid Waste Pickup Delayed
Date Posted: Sunday, January 25th, 2026Due to the continuing storm, the City of New Castle offices will be closed on Monday, 1/26/26. Only essential emergency personnel should report to work. As Public Works staff continues to work to clear the snow and is preparing to deal with this through the end of the storm, solid waste and recycling pickup will be delayed for the week. Yard waste pickup is canceled for the week of 1/26-1/30. Solid waste pickup originally scheduled for Monday, January 26th, 2026 will be collected on Wednesday, January 28th, 2026. Level 2 Driving Restrictions as of 10 am, Sunday 1/25/26
Date Posted: Sunday, January 25th, 2026As of 10 am today; Sunday, January 25th, 2026, the state of Delaware state of emergency remains in effect. Additionally, a Level 2 Driving Restriction for Kent and New Castle Counties has been implemented. This means that – person may operate a motor vehicle on Delaware roadways when a Level 2 Driving Restriction has been activated, except for persons designated as essential personnel including operators of snow removal equipment employed, contracted by a public or private entity or designated persons already approved through the Delaware Emergency Management Agency’s State of Emergency Driving Waiver Program. Public Works crews have been out plowing the City since early this morning. This will continue as the storm progresses. Code Purple Shelters remain open 24 hours statewide. These are temporary, volunteer-run, or non-profit emergency housing activated during severe winter weather to provide safe, warm overnight refuge, meals, and resources. State of Emergency Declared 1/23/2026
Date Posted: Friday, January 23rd, 2026Governor Matthew Meyer has signed a State of Emergency at 5:00 p.m. today in anticipation of Winter Storm Fern. The State of Emergency will take effect at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2026, and will allow for the mobilization of statewide resources needed to prepare for and respond to this storm, including the activation of the Delaware National Guard. Delawareans should also anticipate the issuance of State-mandated Driving Restrictions. Three levels of Driving Restrictions are designed to keep motorists and emergency responders safe by minimizing nonessential travel during periods of severe weather and perilous road conditions. Impending Winter Weather
Date Posted: Friday, January 23rd, 2026The City is monitoring the impending weekend winter weather, which includes extremely cold temperatures and heavy snowfall of several inches, from late Saturday evening through Monday. To support public safety and snow removal operations, residents are asked to: Avoid travel and stay off the roads if possible. Do not push or shovel snow into roadways. Keep snow clear of home vent pipes and exhaust vents. Check on neighbors who may need assistance during extreme cold. If off-street parking is available, please move vehicles, if possible, to facilitate plowing. Please make sure you remove any snow or ice from sidewalk within 24 hours of the end of the storm. Register for Code Red notifications for alerts related to the storm, public safety, trash removal, etc. .
