The level 2 driving restriction for New Castle County has been downgraded to a level 1.  This means that drivers should avoid traveling on roadways, unless there is a significant safety, health, or business reason to do so. All motorists are urged to drive with extreme caution.  On Tuesday, 2/24/2026, the City of New Castle offices will open on a normal schedule.  In order to allow Public Works to continue to cleanup from the storm, solid waste pickup will be delayed one additional day. Yard waste pickup is canceled for the week of 2/23-2/27.  Solid waste pickup originally scheduled for Monday, February 23rd, 2026 will be collected on Wednesday, February 25th, 2026. As of 8 am today, Monday, February 23rd, 2026, the state of Delaware state of emergency remains in effect.  The Level 2 Driving restriction also remains in effect for New Castle County.  This means that no person may operate a motor vehicle on Delaware roadways when a Level 2 Driving Restriction has been activated, except for persons designated as essential personnel including operators of snow removal equipment employed, contracted by a public or private entity or designated persons already approved through the Delaware Emergency Management Agency’s State of Emergency Driving Waiver Program. Public Works crews have been out in the City since yesterday plowing and working to clear the roads as quickly and safely as possible.  They will continue throughout the day to ensure the roads are cleared as the storm continues.  Residents are reminded to remove any snow or ice from sidewalk within 24 hours of the end of […]

A state of emergency has been issued for the state of Delaware at 12 pm on Sunday, February 22, 2026 to allow for the mobilization of statewide resources to prepare for the impending winter storm. Winter Storm Clean Up

  After a long and busy week, we would like to thank the City of New Castle Public Works Team, The Municipal Services Commission of the City of New Castle and Cirillo Brothers for their hard work to prepare for and cleanup from Winter Storm Fern. The snow and ice have been difficult to clean up, but everyone has been working diligently to keep the area as clean and safe as possible. We appreciate the patience and support of the community.  We also thank all residents who have worked to clear their sidewalks and support their neighbors in clearing their sidewalks. We know this was no easy task due to the heavy ice and we thank you for your efforts to keep our community safe.

Governor Matthew Meyer has signed a State of Emergency at 5:00 p.m. today in anticipation of Winter Storm Fern.   The Delaware Grocery Initiative and First State Food System Program (DGI/FSFSP) is back for 2026 with $700K in available funding! The goal is to expand access to healthy foods in food deserts in Delaware and areas at risk of becoming food deserts, by providing grants and other forms of financial assistance to eligible food businesses and organizations, to Delaware farmers; small, community and independent grocery retailers offering culturally diverse foods; food banks; food pantries; and other food supply chain businesses and organizations.
